Can I use an aquarium filter for an aquarium of 100 gallons in a 20 gallon fish tank?
I have a 20 gallon tank and unites me to get a system new filter. I would get something that could filter out as much water as possible. The answer to your question is yes and no. Certainly not more than a water filter in your aquarium, but as has been said that we must consider other things like the amount of current that creates in your tank. If it was a reef tank then you would want strong currents, but if it is a large freshwater tank planted with species Lovers of calm water, as Discus, angels, or betta then this trend would be a real problem. You can regulate the amount that flows through the tank, but this is a loss of filtration and energy needed to run it. Frankly, I do not even consider using the drop in the filter you have linked to a tank of 100 gallons. A filter must be able to move 10 times the volume of water in the tank is for. Only 300 gph I would say that the filter is good for a 30 or even 55 gallons, but no more. With 20 gallon tank that will deliver the tank 15 times per hour so this is a bit of current. If you're going to have fish like African cichlids are very good, but a bit much for a tank of the species planted and tranquil waters. As an example of one way to deal with this problem we have one of my own tanks. I have a tank of 110 liters which is a very planted Discus tank. I have a wet dry filter with 2 pumps pushing to 1500 gallons per hour. Obviously this is a large amount of current to fish I have in the tank. What I did was to cycle 500 gallons per hour through the tank, while another 1,000 GPH is continuously circulated through the filter and sump 30 gallon. It is still effectively filtering the tank at a rate of 15 times per hour, but with today's equivalent to only 5 times per hour. The great thing about this is that it allows a population density much higher and the water quality still a virgin, while allowing me to keep fish that would not do well in a strong current. So all depends on what you are trying to maintain, and always ways to cheat.
