Should I get a Top 60 End of Filter Whisper 60 power filter or power for a 55 gallon tank?
I am fairly new to aquariums, especialy large one, and I am looking for two different kits to buy. One, in Pestmart is a Top Fin 55 gallon starter kit for $ 152.99 (with a discount for having a card in there) which has a Top 60 End power filter and the other is a Premium All-Glass Aquariums 55 gallon kit for $ 199.99 with a Whisper 60 filter poet at Petco. I thought perhaps to buy the cheaper kit and then buy a 280 or Emperor 400 power filter. I eventualy turn, the tank in a nice, medium Comunity planted freshwater tank. Which filter should I go?
If you have to keep one of the filters to obtain the whisper, but in reality, not great. I have a community tank and I'm running 55 plants Fluval 404 filter one cartridge and one undergravel. Fluval drums are large (I 2) and give the power to filter much more than those who come in the kits. With over leak is better (to get ridiculous) to get something that is valued by more than you. That way you will have more surface are good for growing bacteria and more power to keep it running longer. I use a filter similar to the kits in my 29 gallon, but would not think to use it on my 55. You may want to see if you can get only the tank and hood separately and buy their own heater and filter or PetSmart Store online (who sell things much cheaper there than in stores). If you want plants, make sure you get a setup that will allow you to have more than one fluorescent bulb If you get one with only 1 48 "strips or 2 24 "which you will be very limited in what you can keep the plants (mainly Java ferns and Java moss). With 2 or 3 48" bulbs may still many more types and will be much happier in the long term. I have a 55 with a homemade hood that has 2 48 "shop lights ($ 9 each in The Home Depot) so 4 total bulbs and plants grow like crazy. so check the lamps that come in kits as most will not allow you to keep many plants. Also check craigslist.com depending on where you live you may be able to find a configuration of 55 gallons of Nice for less (I got mine for 100 including a stand and added my own filter and light). The important thing is not to spend too much money on things that you will overcome later to try to get at least 2 48 "lights lamp and a filter cartridge good and you never have to upgrade. Good Luck
