I have a 55 gallon fish tank and i clean and change the filter and bowl at least twice a month?
I have a oscar a algae eater and three goldfish in the aquarium and i smell a foul odor coming from the filter. now should i change the filter more often than two times a month or what. and it accumulates a lot of filth.the filter holds two filters at a time. please tell me what to do it’s embarrassing when company comes over because my aquarium is very attractive other than the odor. thank you and have a nice day.
My first question would be what are your water readings like? Ammonia and nitrites? You should be doing a weekly 25% water change not every two weeks. The filter itself should be rinsed in the used water and put back into the filter motor. The smell is more than likely ammonia that you are smelling. The buildup on the filter continuing to rot for two weeks. Try switching to a weekly water change with filter media cleaning. Whatch how much food you are feeding since this will add to the problem. The filter media itself can remain in the tank until it is just about falling apart.
