Fish tank filter help?
I have a fish tank that’s about15 gallons I think. I have a Whisper 10i and I don’t know if it pump oxygen into the water or if it just filters it out. Does anybody know?
Also- should I get an air pump or something? Someone help!
The filter does not pump oxygen onto the water, oxygen enters the water through a process called aeration. Your filter may aid in the aeration process if it is causing the surface water to ripple and stir around, your filter may also have a sort of waterfall design to aid in creating more surface area but i would still recommend getting an air pump with some kind of air stone, Fish really love the bubbles and mind like hang out and swim in them. The addition of an air pump would be the best possible way of getting more dissolved oxygen into the water in your case, the air pump would create a lot of bubbles and the more bubbles you have the more surface area and water to air contact you would achieve, any method of aeration is essentially about creating more water surface to air contact.
You will be able to tell if there is not enough oxygen in your water if your fish are hanging out at the surface or in front of the filters out flow, these are both sure signs that there is not enough dissolved oxygen in your tanks water.
