How do you take care of fish tank plants?
I bought a plant for my tank and it seems to be dying off. The Petsmart worker said I just need light for it. Am I doing something wrong?
I’m not sure what type of plant I have, it’s from petmarts. The plant is looks like leaves that re purple on one side and green on the other. I’m not sure what type of light I have as well, I have the Eclipse 6 set up.
Do you have a picture of the plant? Some plants need high light, some need low light, and some aren’t even aquatic at all. Generally, the plants that need high light also need CO2 to thrive.
To take care of aquatic plants, you need much more than just a light. It needs to be an aquarium light. You’ll also need CO2 (for high light plants) and fertilizer (made for aquariums, NOT household). You’ll want to turn on the lights for 7-9 hours a day. Plants absorb CO2 when the lights are on, so having the light on and no CO2 is almost worthless. You’ll also want to fertilize it after every water change and/or monthly.

EDIT: Purple leaves on one side and green leaves on the other sounds like Ludwiga. But Petsmart also sells non-aquatic plants, so yours could be Purple Waffle, which is a terrestrial plant. Ludwigas require high lighting, and I think the Eclipse 6 only provides average lighting.
