Setting Up Your Aquarium
The creation of an aquarium requires some basic knowledge, but is not as daunting a task as one might first imagine.
Before putting anything in the aquarium, make sure the glass is fairly clean. You will not have the chance again for a long, long time. If you have an old tank, remove all lime deposits from the glass. Rub the inside with ordinary table salt and a little water. Rinse well. If this does not eliminate all impurities, wool steel or use razor blade scraper.
Throughout the United States and Canada, dealers are packed sand for aquariums. This sand is recommended, but if you are in a position where no dealer is available, we suggest you use river sand or a side of heavy sand used by the builders. sand silver and other fine unhelpful, because they rise too easily in water. As much of the sand in the United States are breast-lime, a simple test should done to see that the sand is free of any file.
heavy weight of sand of various types, with different colors, often can be obtained from any shipyard builder. There to go through a wire sieve to remove all stones, and then washed thoroughly to remove all dust, dirt and finer grit.
Washing may performed by placing a bucket under a faucet in the sink or hose in the garden. Stir well until the water overflowing from the bucket runs clear. A test that can be done by putting some sand in a bottle and pour water on it. If the water is cloudy, the arena is ready.
Now the sand, still wet, carefully spread over the entire base of the tank. If you are using the method of biological filtration to keep your aquarium clean, keep firmly in panel filter place with one hand. Then take handfuls of sand and pull gently on the filter and around the edges of the filter cover. Add more wet sand to the depth you might want. One or two inches is good. In general, tends to be deeper in the back.
At this point, the rocks can be added. If more a level that is needed, two or three very large pieces of stone can be placed in a row or a semicircle, and the place surrounded by sand filled. If just one level is planned, smaller pieces can be placed at desired points as if carried there by river action.
Do not overdo the rocks. We have seen tanks that look like more like a mason's yard, or a cemetery, an underwater scene. Remember that rocks displace water, and the two, water is the most valuable fish and plants.
The best type of rock to be used are the sandstones, of which there are many types, in various shades of brown, yellow, green and gray. Granite can also be use, and some varieties of quartz, which give an effect very imaginative, but are inclined to present sharp edges which can hurt fish.
Where possible, the stone is already selected should be one water used, since this seems more natural and not as likely to be harmful as the new broken. Limestone is not safe to use as some types allow water to dissolve the lime and thus harden the water. Marble, alabaster, spar, and gypsum are the worst and should never be used. rocks color must be tested before use, since some of them contain chemicals that are toxic to fish, for example, rocks that contain copper. Slate, Coal or coke (first lava pit) can be used with effect at times.
When everything is ready, we can turn our attention to filling the tank with water.
Congratulations! You are on track to have a fully functional aquarium.
