Southwest Florida Vacation Sarasota area (February)?
We were initially going to Miami but was too expensive, so we decided to use the money to do more things in a less expensive area.
I’m in charge of planning things to do. We will be renting an apartment 10 miles east of Venice. We will be there for 7 days, 5 days (minus 2 days arrival/departure at the airport). I’m thinking:
1-2. day beach/hot springs
3. Aquarium to see dolphins show (aka sea world)
4. Everglades tour to see nature and alligators
5. ?
We’ll be renting a car so I’d like to do day trips that aren’t more than a couple of hours travel time.
Suggestions or links to resources would be nice, but I like to hear from real people instead of promotional web site/book.

You’ll want to visit Sarasota Jungle Gardens. When I was there, I fed the flamingos, saw an excellent reptile and bird show, and was able to hold an alligator. This is a great place to visit and I highly recommend it.

Myakka River State Park is a wonderful place to see. You can take a boat tour, tram tour, drive or bike the park, as well. It’s very scenic and the tours are very informative. It’s only about 9 miles from Sarasota. The wildlife watching and hiking trails are very good there. I highly recommend visiting Myakka River State Park.

As for beaches, Siesta Key is fantastic. Beautiful, clean white-sand beach. Great for sunbathing or swimming. It’s one of the best beaches in the Sarasota area.

Kayaking is also fun. Siesta Key and Lido Key are just a couple great places to kayak.
The Big Cat Habitat is another great Sarasota attraction.
