Can you have a painted turtle in your fish tank without letting them able to put there whole body out?

I go to stores and other place and they put the painted turtle in there aquarium without any supplies. The painted turtle does not come out of the water. I thought they do come out of the water to heat themselves and to get air. But don’t they don’t drown. They just stay under water and act as if they are in water. Could they actually stay underwater and not drown?
I always wanted to know. Please answer this question properly.

Painted turtles as well as other aquatic turtles do need to bask. It’s unfortunate though that so many pet stores are outdated in information regarding turtles. You can’t trust the majority of pet stores and their employees when it comes to turtles.

Turtles need a large tank and a basking area with a heat light as well as a UVB light over the basking area. They need both of these for their health. Pet stores don’t supply that with the turtles they sell – that’s why the majority of the turtles in a pet store are sick. Either they can’t open their eyes from an eye infection or respiratory infection (RI) or more often than not their shells have white marks on them and are horrible looking due to shell rot and other fungi infections from being poorly kept. It’s sad to say but every time I go into Petco I find a dead turtle in one of their tanks. When I tell the employee working in that department all they say is “oh” or some times they’ll mutter “oh yeah, they don’t live too long.” A healthy turtle that has all the requirements can live with you for 20+ years.

The turtles you are seeing probably adjusted to their treatment and just make due – but they will easily get an infection if they don’t already have one. A turtle needs to bask and get their shell completely dry or they will develop shell rot and other infections. These turtles will not live a long life and instead live a short painful one.

A turtle can stay under water for a certain amount of time, but they do pop up for air to breath if that answers the other part of your question. They breath air, so they can’t remain under the water (head included) for hours on end because they breath air just like we do.
