Tropical tank woes. Please advise?
I have a 20 gallon tank that I would like to keep in my living room to house tropical fish; there seems to be more choices in fish available with brighter colors. And, to be honest, I don’t like goldfish (which seems to be one of the only cold-water fish out there). Here’s my problem: I like keeping my house cool. When I say cool I mean 50-60 degrees (F). Will that low of a room temp be even too much for a good tank heater?
I don’t want to freeze my fish, but I don’t want to turn up the thermostat during the winter months. Tropical fish should be fine during the summer months; the weather goes up to 80(F) and I won’t waste energy cooling my house. But I’m worried about the fish during the winter.
Repeat: I will NOT turn up the thermostat; I love cold and prefer to layer clothes and the heater stirs up my sinuses…don’t know why, it just does.
Two one hundred watt aquarium heaters will keep your fish cozy without sacrificing your comfort. I suggest two heaters instead of one large one because heaters are prone to failure. Its always good to have a back up in the tank. Something to consider is for the energy concious aquarist is to paint the back and two sides of the aquarium black and glue on foam insulation board to them. Helps keep the aquarium from loosing heat as fast. Keep a tight fitting hood on the aquarium as this contributes to a loss of heat as well. If your furnace bothers your sinuses and it is a forced air furnace, change your filters at least once a month. If it is just the fact that it drys out your sinuses, sometimes a large humidifier helps a great deal too. Oh yeah, something to consider is that a deep bed of gravel and plenty of rocks will also help maintian your aquariums temperature and keep your heater from running as often. Or for the truly energy concious, go with cool water fish.White Clouds, Crabs, Ghost Shrimp, Tadpoles, Aquatic Snails, and Live Plants all do well in a Cool Water Aquarium. If you are looking to add a bizarre fish, a Dragon Fish may be just perfect for your aquarium. But keeping a Dragon Fish requires more skill than keeping Goldfish, and Dragon Fish need to eat live food such as Ghost Shrimp.
