Heating Betta Fish Tanks
Heating betta fish tanks is a piece of cake. As you may know, Bettas are tropical fish that thrive in an environment of about 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. These type of fish easily live to be five years or older, however most die much quicker than that because they are kept in small, unheated bowls. When fish are kept in water much cooler than they prefer, they become stressed and it causes an early death. Even if you do not have a large betta fish tank or heater, there’s still a way for you to heat your tank to keep your Bettas alive longer. Follow these careful instructions.
- First, you need to have a thermometer to consistently monitor the temperature of your tank. It should not fluctuate much between 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A shorter life or horrible illnesses could take over your fish if its too cold or if the temperature of the water fluctuates too much.
- For help maintaining that specific temperature, you may want to get a small heater. Note that Betta fish should never live in tanks with less than a gallon of water. A recommended size is about five gallons. Make sure there is enough room for them to freely move about.
- You could also use a flat heater which is a fairly inexpensive piece of equipment. These will raise the temperature of the water by five degrees depending on the size of your tank. The bad thing about these is that they are not adjustable so it must be monitored. A flat heater does not shut off if the water gets too hot. You also need an aerator to keep the water moving because without one of these, your bowl’s water is not heated evenly. You will notice your Betta remaining right next to the heater if this happens.
- If your tank is five gallons or larder, use a regular, adjustable heater. Be sure to maintain a steady, healthy temperature no matter how large your tank is. If yours is 10 gallons or larger you will need a pretty large heater to uphold it.
- Before you place your fish in your newly heated betta fish tanks, warm up the water they already sit in so that you don’t shock him and make him extremely uncomfortable for the remainder of the day.
