My fish’s tail is dissapearing and it can’t swim – What does this mean?
We’ve had the fish since christmas and theres 4 fish and 2 plecs (black moore, small goldfish, bubble eyes and a white and orange one). It’s a 30 litre tank and we clean out about 1/3 of it every week and replace the water with fresh water about the same tempreature as in the tank. Some little white spots keep appearing on the side of the tank in the shape of a horse shoe (obviously a lot smaller; don’t know if it means anything??) About a week ago they started floating on the bottom of the tank and many people said it was because of constipation; we didn’t feed them for 3 days a started feeding the again but a lot less. Now two of them are back to normal but the black moore and the little orange one seem to be rapidly going down hill. The little orange one has got any fins and it’s tail is rapidly getting smaller. What’s wrong? The black moore just keeps getting stuck in the fake plants and sometimes just floats on the top. Please help we don’t want to loose them x
Hi Laura-several problems going on in your tank right now but everything sounds like it’s resolvable but you will have to move fast on this one if you want to save your pets-the bottom sitting, floating & fin damage is classic signs of poor water conditions.
Your tank is way overstocked & far too small for a single Goldfish let alone 4 plus 2 Plecos. 30 litres is only about 8 US or 6 UK gallons. Each Goldfish needs at least 10 gallons of water because Goldfish make a lot of waste & as whatever tank we provide for them is their toilet it follows that the largest amount of water we give them the slower it will take them to pollute their environment. Another problem is the Plecos & Goldfish are not compatible with each other-both require different specifications of environment & the Plecos, being nocturnal often snack on the protective slime coats on the Goldfish leaving them vulnerable to all manner of ailments. The Goldfish in turn produce such a large amount of waste that the delicate Plecos stand a very real chance of being asphyxiated-especially in such cramped conditions & the stress of living in such appealing conditions will further hasten any decline.
You need to separate the Plecos & the Goldfish-Plecos & regular Goldfish grow to over a foot & a half long so you are looking at least at a 55 gallon tank for your Goldfish & a 40 gallon for your Plecos. These tanks need to have fitted lids & filtration for double the tank size in the Goldfish tank. Even in a segregated tank you might still have problems as you have mixed fancy Goldfish with regular ones & the fancies will always get outcompeted for food. The Bubble Eye with it’s very delicate eyes is especially at risk, not just from other Goldfish but anything sharp or rough in the tank may burst his eyes so loose the fake plants-this will also stop the Moors getting entangled.
I can’t say what the white spots are that are appearing on the tank sides but with regard to the fish that is loosing it’s fins-this is the ammonia & nitrite build up in the water literally eating away at the fins & unchecked this will continue until it reaches the body & ultimately kill it-think living in an acid bath. The partial water changes you a re doing are never going to be enough to dilute such densely populated water to anything like acceptable levels. Once a good quality of water is established in suitable size of tank with proper maintenance the fins will naturally regenerate although to what amount is not certain depending on the damage.
You really need to be moving on this immediately or you will loose all your fish.
