Saltwater fish less reef tank.?

I have a 10 gallon fish tank with freshwater equipment (i kept freshwater fish). What uv do i need for reefs and remember just reefs. Do i need a new filter or is a freshwater filter good. What about a heater. Im on a tight budget so what else else is absolutely needed. How much will it cost. Can u tell me something about your experiences too.

I recommend you go out and buy a book on reefkeeping.

I also recommend that if you are on a tight budget, it is in your best interest and the best interest of the animals to not go into the reef hobby, especially if you have no prior experience keeping marine tanks.

Reef tanks are expensive, even small ones. Freshwater filters are not a good idea for reef, as water quality must be pristine for a reef tank, calcium levels, pH, buffering capacity, and waste levels constantly monitored, and for a ten gallon there wouldn’t be very many options on what kinds of species you could keep. Many need intense lighting (t5 or metal halide bulbs, which are not only expensive but would make your tank hot) and you would need a protein skimmer and sump for best results.

there are a number of other equipment items you would need to buy also, but I don’t recommend setting this up. Go with a saltwater fish only tank with perhaps one percula clown or a neon goby, as this will be much easier to take care of, and somewhat less expensive.

By the way, great book on reefkeeping is The Marine Reef Aquarium, by Philip Hunt. Will tell you everything you need to know if you want to go into this hobby later in the future.
