Fish Tank Aquariums – 3 Crucial Questions to Ensure Your Success
Fish tank aquariums can be found in virtually any size and shape, but it is important to realize that they come in only two materials – acrylic and glass. Naturally one made from glass will be heavier and is susceptible to shattering. If you have any children you’ll have greater peace of mind with the acrylic type. Knowing what you want and why before you begin to shop, will put you ahead of the game and give you a sense of confidence of knowing what you are doing.
Which One Should You Choose?
Acrylic is not only lighter and safer than glass, but is actually stronger as well. While glass is the most common aquarium, it should be your second option.
How Many Fish Can I put into the tank?
Many aquarium owners are inadvertently cruel to their fish by overloading the tank with as many fish as they can afford, without giving any thought to the oxygen needed by each fish. Before purchasing your tank, consider the amount of fish that you want and make sure that the size of your fish tank aquarium will have enough oxygen to accommodate them. Or you can do it the other way around and determine the size of the tank you want, and use the formula (see resource box below) to calculate how many fish the tank can comfortably accommodate.
Where will you put your fish tank aquarium?
Now it’s time to consider where you are going to place the tank. There are a number of things you’ll need to think about. As you know, the tank will require access to water and also to electricity for the pump and for lighting purposes.
You’ll want to take a look at the potential places around your home and consider the traffic, the sunlight, as well as the size and weight of the tank. If it’s a large tank it may need to be against a weight bearing wall. And too much sunshine can quickly produce too much heat and become a detriment.
