Do I really need a stand for my fish tank?
Stands are so expensive and I need something my 11 month old son won’t get into (a locked cabinet underneath) to store all the required fish stuff. Can I use something in my house to set it on? How do I know it will hold? We really want fish and have the tank (30 gal), hood, light, therm. and heater from a yard sale. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!
A sturdy dresser will do the trick if the tanks is a reasonable size the best thing you can do to keep him out of it is to get a storage bin and keep the contents atop a closet or get a traditional stand with cupboard doors and install a locking mechanism on the doors.
If its cost you are also worrying about, try craigslist of if you or your husband is handy or know a friend who is you can build a nice stand (out of treated lumber and ply wood) for around 50 dollars.
Metal stands are relatively inexpensive, however they do not evenly distribute the weight of the water along the floor. I have one on a metal stand sitting on a thick sheet of plywood under the carpet to distribute the weight.
