how do i sterilize my gravel pum cleaner for my fish tank?

I wouldn’t use a dishwasher — there might be some minor soap residue (no spots!) left on it that would then transfer to the tank water. To sterilize pretty much anything regarding aquariums, use bleach.

Soak the item in a weak (or strong, if you want) bleach solution of hotwater and 10% bleach — leave it there for up to an hour. Bear in mind that this can remove color from certain things like plastic plants if done repeatedly (i.e. 10+ times).

When done, rinse it off thoroughly, and then soak in pure water with some dechlorinator. This will get it ready for further use.
