2 Important Considerations for a Fish Tank Canopy
If you are a fish owner, you’ll know that having a fish tank canopy is an integral part of any aquarium or fish tank. The canopy not only helps in protecting the fish living inside the tank, a nice canopy also increases the aesthetic appeal of the tank. A fish tank canopy is essentially a sturdy cover that can open and shut easily over the fish tank. It is also a convenient option for fish owners who want to have fixtures such as lights and filters installed within their aquariums. Moreover, having a canopy means that other pets such as cats and dogs cannot reach into the tank and disturb the fishes. If you are looking at purchasing your own canopy or maybe building one yourself, there are several options available for you.
Lighting options
Canopy lights have several options on offer. Fluorescent lighting offers a bright light, which creates a very modern look. But some fishes can be very sensitive to fluorescent light. Your pet store will let you know which kinds of fishes are light sensitive. If you plan on keeping such fishes, it is better not to install fluorescent lights. Some special lights which imitate sunlight may be the best option for tanks which have a varied mix of fishes. Other light options include digital lights, which are timer controlled to go off during the day time and LED lights that are energy efficient.
Materials
As with lights, even canopies are available in many shapes, designs and materials. Wooden canopies are the most popular of all. Plywood, oak wood or birch canopies are most easily available. They are reasonably priced and look great with a matching cabinet. Other types of wood are probably available on request. However, the one disadvantage of a wooden fish tank canopy is that you can’t get them wet. Glass canopies work well both for saltwater or freshwater tanks. They are an excellent way to show off the aquarium and are also cheap. Some people also opt for metal canopies. However, metal tends to rust and is probably not the best option for a canopy.
Additional features such as air hoses, filters and pre wired waterproof end caps are also available at pet stores and fit easily onto the fish tank canopy.
