Why does my 2 gallon fish tank have an aerator?
I noticed that my 2 gallon tank has an aeration system, but my bigger one just has a filter. Why do I need an aerator?
You don’t really need an air pump (I assume that’s what you’re talking about). It’s just kinda nice to have, and can be helpful if your filter doesn’t splash the water.
If your filter agitates the surface of the water then you can turn your air pump off if you like.
Some people just like the effect.
Bob Lobster: Bubbles in the water don’t add air to the water. The air bubble simply comes up to the surface and escapes, that’s WHY it’s a bubble, because it’s surfacing and escaping. Aeration (oxygenation) of the water happens at the surface when something agitates the surface, the way many filter outputs do.
