Starting a marine aquarium – the very first considerations

Seeing pictures of a healthy marine fish only or reef aquarium in books or on Internet, or better yet, in reality in a public aquarium will cause any person to point to appreciate the beauty and general fascination of them. Some people wonder whether there might be one, and the idea soon disappear. Others, however, will not forget so easily and will want to explore further the possibility of having your own home aquarium.

If the potential aquarist knows a friend who already has a healthy marine aquarium, then there is a source of advice available now. The friend will have already gone through all the investigations and considerations. Often, however, the potential fans will have to discover for yourself. That is very good, because the aquarium system means well. Then there may be a known marine aquarist available, so what is the first step? Galloping to the local store and buy an aquarium and a few moments of the computers that store, said that is needed is totally wrong.

The first step is to follow a scaffold planning. This scaffolding will be the basis for all decisions to be made in strengthening the system. There are quite a few decisions along the way and things can be confusing, even for someone who has experience in the field of freshwater aquarium. The scaffold is help.

The scaffold must prepare the budding marine aquarist for indicative costing to provide basic equipment possible. Often, marine aquarists have equipment laying about. This could have been caused by improved because the original team was not enough and needed to be replaced. The money spent may not have to have been.

Therefore, the scaffolding below. The following is a list of items and base notes. Do not try and is not intended to open a path Full access to zero at a single great reef or fish tank. What it does is give the example to follow in the path to a successful aquarium. No doubt additional considerations emerge on the road, and that's as it should be, means that planning is working. Each stage of planning requires individual consideration, and will often be more that a decision to make. On the way, research with books and / or the Internet is useful or necessary.

Whenever feasible aquarium plants?
Try to choose a place away from direct sunlight to help appropriate lighting control. There should be heavy and / or noisy household traffic crossing (traffic reasonable is acceptable). There needs to be a reliable supply of energy available, ie. outlets. In general, easy access to the aquarium is necessary. If floors are suspended into account the intensity of soil – water filled tanks are heavy sea!

What size tank?
The aquarium should not be kept in ordinary furniture, but on a stand designed properly. The aquarium may need a bell. These have to be taken into account. Then the space for the aquarium can be considered.

What kind of system?
The system can be single or reef fish. This decision affects other decisions forward. Most opt for a reef.

Sump or no sump?
A sink is a small aquarium attached to the principal. Provides capability additional water to the system, allowing the heaters, sand beds and protein skimmers to be kept away from the display tank. The pump can be near or below the display tank. A sump in any type of system is highly recommended. (If a sump is to be used, the main tank will have be drilled to allow the plumbing to make the aquarium water into the crankcase. Then is pumped back again.) Note: If a DSB (deep sand bed) or camera (A raised OSD) is to be used, the sand bed area must be at least 2/3rds of the base surface of the main aquarium. The sand bed should be at least 4 " depth. Consider the cost of sand for the DSB. A DSB in the sump is highly recommended. Leave enough space for a partitioned area for the return pump seawater.

Enlightenment?
Does the system is only fish or a reef? If fish only, then two fluorescent marine sufficient. If reefs then:

Hard corals.
Best halide lighting, supplemented by actinic fluorescent tubes. T5 fluorescent tubes can be used (white and Marine Actinic also mixed), but do not penetrate the sea water as background.

Soft corals.
It is sufficient to use fluorescent lamps T5 (Actinic white and mixed). halide lighting can be used, however, not be detrimental (to ensure corals exposed varieties are light demanding).

ability Net seawater aquarium and sump (if used)? This is easily calculated once the size of the aquarium and the sump to be determined. This gallonage will be excessive because, when rocks and sand are added, will decrease. Therefore, reducing the amount by 10%. This will not remain correct, but gives a reasonable amount for travel.

Sea water circulation?
The sea water in the aquarium exhibit will be distributed to health of the people whatever they are, but especially in a reef system. It is recommended that a minimum of two heads of power are used to achieve this. The turnover of water sea on a reef must be about ten to twenty times the net capacity of the display tank (excluding the sump) per hour, depending on the occupants of coral .. In fish only systems, may be less.

Protein skimmer?
A protein skimmer is essential for most systems (*), in particular when there is lack of experience. The device is very useful as it helps greatly to water quality high. The protein skimmer must be of a size about twice capacity of seawater aquarium net sink (if used). Now that the use of a sump (or not) has decided to consider the possibility of using a separate wing on or skimmer.
(* Designs based on the system a little mud, do not require a spoon.)

Heating?
The net gallonage of the system is known, so the need for heating may be considered. (Note: it is better to buy two heaters as this is a good safety feature for the inhabitants of the aquarium. Each heater should be half the requirement for heating.) In hot climates, where temperatures are consistently above 80 º F, use a water cooler sea (chiller) will replace the heaters.

Back bomb?
This only applies if you use a sump. Sea water once flowed into sump, needs to be returned to the main aquarium. A pump is needed for this. As a guide, the flow through the drain should be two or three times the net capacity of the system per hour. In considering the pump, remember to take into account the elevator, which is the height from the level of the pump to the highest point that water reaches the sea before coming back to the aquarium principal.

rock 'Live'.
This is used for filtering (is excellent for this) and for the construction of the reef. You can also used in a single system of fish. Allow 1 ½ pounds per gallon that is found throughout the system. There are other methods of filtration, but "live" rock, along with a DSB in a sump is highly recommended.

Reverse osmosis (R / S) of the unit?
Unit R / O is a filtration of tap water device that removes almost all (about 95-98%) unwanted contaminants. Therefore the mixture of sea water is at its best from the beginning. It is recommended that R / O water is always used, including the first filling of the tank. R / O comes in different units of gallons per day output. Remember that usually the tank is completely filled once. The normal amount of routine water change is 10% of weekly net gallonage system.

Dry mixture of salt?
There are several brands on the market. If keeping reef system, obtain one that is "designed" to reefs, while attention has provided more than fish, calcium content etc. systems can only use "standard" mixes or as described above.

Make a list.
Since each element has gone through, discover and write the likely cost. If electrical power is also noted (W).

The evidence. When all items are priced add up. This is a general guide to the cost of installation. If electric, add the wattage. Divide the total wattage by 1000, this will give kilowatts. The electricity cost per kilowatt will be released. Multiply the number of kilowatts, including any part, by the cost per kilowatt, this is the approximate cost electrical operation of the system per day. For weekly, multiply by seven. Monthly, multiply by four. Etc. (Note: the lights can be considered as 50% of the day. Heaters / coolers will not be at all times, but it is difficult to determine a guideline percentage.)

Click OK. The list is there and indicates the guideline aquarium equipment cost and electric cost to operating the system. These will not be completely accurate, but close enough to deter any the desire to have an aquarium or to go ahead. There are other costs, of course. For example, it has taken account of live fish and / or corals that are going to the aquarium. After team additional, often considered later, could be obtained, as a calcium reactor, one of nitrator, or a cartridge filter, etc. Perhaps coral gravel, ½ 1 "deep, will be used as a decoration in the display tank.

However, the scaffolding has achieved its purpose, which is general to guide the new aquarist on a road that cuts its way through what can be a confusing start.

After the scaffold, there is much to be done. Many responses can be found in the list articles on this site (http://www.aquaristsonline.com).

appropriate items can be worked through one by one. All remaining questions can go on the forum. The Internet is an excellent resource for knowledge. Write in a name, for example, lighting marine aquarium in a search engine should produce a good response. Then, of course, there are books. Nothing like an hour of reading before bedtime!
