Yes you can. Commly These are found in saltwater tanks (in fish are more sensitive to nitrogenous waste), but still work in fresh water. You will be given the volume of water added to dilute the waste and the added surface for colonization of bacteria to remove ammonia and nitrite – both characteristics are an advantage if you have fish that produce a large amount of waste.
