Water conditioner really necessary in an aquarium? What to do? Could harm the fish (mine was sick)?
I like to put chemicals in the water.: / Also, when once added some fresh water conditioner running water, and waited a bit before put my goldfish in it … Later I realized that the fish sank to the bottom and not moving, the only movements that did were small shocks tail. When I removed the following morning (which had been conditioned in water overnight) to this old water that was there in a jar of pickles (only for that emergency!) is totally just returned to his old self. What happened there? I know you put in the amount of conditioner.
It depends on your water tap. Most tap water has "chemicals", said the water company, usually chlorine or chloramine. These are placed in sterilized and make water safe to drink. It kill any living being in the water, fish incuded. If water has been treated with chloramine then you must use water conditioner as this will not evaporates quickly, like chlorine. The water conditioner reacts with any residual chlorine in water and converts it into harmless salt. It is unlikely that the conditioner caused the problem, unless they fall into the whole bottle. However, a sudden change in water parameters could put the fish into shock. If the water comes from different sources is the pH and hardness can change. Water is not "bad", but is different from what the fish is used to. The best thing to do is simply change part of the water each time. 20-30% should be safe. Thus there can be no sudden change in water chemistry. You can do partial water changes as often as you want that it wont harm the fish, but you should use water conditioner unless you're 100% sure your tap water is safe. Ian
