What supplies (other than guppies) are necessary to keep in an aquarium?
I am doing a project for the science fair in guppies …. and need to know how to care for them @ home
You will need a tank. How many guppies? You must have a minimum of 5 gallons and 1.5 gallons for each Guppy. So if you want 3 guppies, that's an 8-gallon tank. Always get more women than men – if there are as many women (or less) males are always bothering them. Will any substrate (gravel or sand) You will need a heater (submersible heater, Ego-Jaggar is a good brand). Also you should get a thermometer. You will need a plate (hanging from the back) filter (get a filter rated for 20 gallons more than the deposit – so if you have a 10gallon tank, get a filter rated for 30 gallons) Do you want live plants? If so, will have a fluorescent light to grow. Will other tank decorations such as rocks, driftwood, castles, coconut shells, artificial plants. Need water conditioner to neutralize chlorine in your tap water. You will have a net, to catch fish, and a vacuum tube ground to clean the tank. Do 20% -30% water change every week. You will also need tank cycle. In nature and in established tanks, there are colonies of bacteria (which are the nitrifying bacteria). When the fish poop, or when waste decays fishfood, toxic ammonia is produced. These bacteria break down ammonia into less toxic nitrates. There are several ways to get these bacteria. You can purchase some of Bio-Spira, which is the actual live bacteria http://fishstoretn.com/bio_spira.html – Some petstore sell products like the cycle, the bacterium is dead, and is completely useless. Total waste of money. You can also get a sponge filter and / or a bit of gravel from a set Fishbowl. Lots of bacteria there. These are the two methods at the moment cycle storage (well, it takes about a day) You can put a source of ammonia in the tank (like a piece of shrimp, or some eat fish every two days. Or you can put a fish which produce ammonia. Takes 2-5 weeks to build enough bacteria. Until then, fish (if placed in the boot) suffer from a burn ammonia, and borders on animal cruelty, so if you must put it in right away and not cycle time, further changes water (up to 30%, once every few days) to keep ammonia levels down. Good luck! Also, if you have any women, expect a lot babies. If you do not want babies, get only males.
