How to convert a saltwater aquarium to a freshwater aquarium?
I recently purchased an aquarium from somebody that was used as a water tank salt. It is very dirty and has salt covered everywhere. I have to clean all the algae and salt. I just use water and a scrubber or is there more? I read somewhere to use vinegar, anyone ever heard of this? Also what is a protein scimmer? The tank comes with all sorts of things I'm not familiar with. Can I stay with any decoration that was in the tank if rinse? Thanks for any advice you can give. I have 5 goldfish and 2 luxury queue small catfish in my other tank I plan on transferring into this tank. The decor is mostly rocks and fake plants. I removed all the old earth because I want to use the rocks that had in my old tank. It came with 2 filters of a dual biography of the wheel and using stones with coal. I was thinking of the maintenance and replacement filters what I can with new things. Or do I clean the pads and the wheels and the deck?
Vinegar and water will be fine for brushing the inside of the tank. Do not use your regular algae scrubber though. Use something disposable so you can just toss all the germs and dirt away. Soak all decor in a solution diluted bleach for a while to get rid of the diseases that may be present. A protein skimmer removes organic materials from saltwater aquariums and not necessary to create a fresh water environment for fish. Good move not using the old gravel, you do not want bacteria in your new creation, the fish tank of age. I'm really surprised there was any gravel, sand is a popular substrate for saltwater tanks. What kind of filter does not come with your new tank. It is necessary do some research on this filter, as they may not be compatible with your freshwater tank. If it is just a standard power filter, pull the pad and placed in an empty container and turn it on and let it run to solve the problem. Also, scrub the inside very well to get rid of old algae, debris and bacteria. Pipe cleaners work well to clean the pipe. Be sure to clean everything as well as possible.
