How to reduce nitrite in an aquarium?
We had a few fish are dying in our 30 gallon tank of fresh water. Then, we used a strip water test and found that nitrite levels are off the chart! Any suggestions on products or what to do to reduce nitrite levels?
Nitrites are among the most harmful pollutants in the aquarium. Nitrite water is a toxic waste material found in varying concentrations in most aquariums. It occurs as nitrifying bacteria in the biological filter to break the ammonia. As the biological filter develops and grows, the bacteria use nitrite as a source food, convert non-toxic nitrate, which reduces the level of nitrite in the aquarium. Regular testing for nitrite is important because even low levels nitrite affect the red blood cells of fish, reducing their ability to carry oxygen, causing suffocation and fish kills. During the beginning of a new tank, Nitrite levels will rise and can stress or even kill fish. However, even after an aquarium is first "cycle" is not uncommon for you tank to the experience of nitrite "spikes" from time to time. By making your monthly exams, including tests of nitrites as part of the routine. Any elevation nitrite levels is a red flag that indicates a problem brewing in the tank. If the level nitrite is above 0.5 ppm, conduct a small water change. Remove all waste from both the bottom of the tank as possible. Treating water with Fritz conditioner replacement Water Guard Aloe Vera and Vitamin E significantly reduce fish stress and the possibility of infection. For best results, add Fritz Zyme # 7 Freshwater nitrifying bacteria or Fritz Zyme # 9 Saltwater nitrifying bacteria naturally reduce toxic ammonia and nitrite quickly. When possible, add Turbo Start # 700 or # 900 for ammonia faster and permanent or possible elimination of nitrite. Turbo Start is a safe and effective, super-concentrated product of nitrifying bacteria.
