Aquarium of limestone used as a tampon?
Hello, my PH aquarium is always in a slow decline, so I recently told to put a piece large limestone rock in my sump to act as a buffer ……… I wondered if there were downsides to doing this at all …. and no matter how big a piece you put in. …….. . (Because Wil last longer) And how often have to change the limestone, or just until everything is dissolved? What will to raise my PH? Or just keep raising the pH is taken up? Thx for all your help
Adding a kind of limestone for your tank will help keep pH. What happens is that as water becomes more acidic, reacts with the Dissolve the lime some of it, and the pH is maintained at a constant level. No matter what you used, it will last for decades, perhaps longer. Think how long it takes for water to excavate a limestone cave in … million years. Once the pH rises more by 8 chemical reaction stops and the pH remains stable. If you want the pH constant at a lower level will have to play with the amount of lime to get the results desired. Use of crushed limestone gravel or shells may work better, more convenient to adjust the amount (only add or remove handfuls as necessary) and largest area of younger media runs faster. The only drawback is if you make major drastic changes in pH, but because the process is fairly slow you can monitor the pH and add more or less of limestone, as needed. Decorate an African cichlid tank with crushed limestone and shells is quite normal, as it helps maintain the pH. Ian
