Just kidding, but is 500 watt metal halide strong for a 50 gallon tank with dimension 48x13x19? I want to grow corals and anemones but I think I could be strong. I bought the light should downgrade I. Do I have too? or is it fine
Reef are very, very sensitive as you know, having a higher wattage bulb may tend to warm the water up alittle and you may need a refrigeration unit, as to the bulb from burning the reef "I'm not sure.

It all depends on what you are keeping in the tank. Since you are planning a reef, I would say that it is not rare to have more wattage than that over a 50 gallon reef. I have a 37 gallon with 2 150 watt metal halides and 2 24w actinic t-5′s for a total ove almost 350 watts. I think I could use a little more as my tank is dominant sps.
