Question about aquarium lighting?
Lighting a planted tank say it needs 4.2 watts per gallon how does this apply to born and lights fluorescent when they say that 40 watts, but are equivalent to 100 watt incandescent light bulb go by wattage incandescent or fluorescent power? Is this an antiquated system of lighting needs or capacity is of 2.4 watts per gallon estimate calculated for fluorescent lamps? Fish lover so I'm trying to decide whether to obtain a 4 54 watt t-5 fixture or power 65Watt CFL 4 of its recommendation and why? I understand not being able to use only incandecesents use it as an example
You may not use incandescent lights for planted tanks. This rule is a watt out of date a bit, which applies only to T-12 bulbs and T-8 lamps. And only you can use fluorescent, 2-4 watts is good for the light plant. It could only have one watt per gallon, or 1.5 watts for low light plants. What I said before about the rule to be out of date, because when you use other things like T-5, and all the expensive T-2, which does not need much.
