Should I be worried that a large pink bollworm magically appeared in my saltwater aquarium after 5 years?
I had an aquarium 10g salted water for 5 years. Only three animals, a clown fish, a snail, and a feather duster. I have taken them all back in high school when a friend needs help. Nothing new has been added to the tank since then. Last night I saw something moving in the tank so it uses a flashlight and to my surprise I found a WORM about 5 cm long. He reacted to the light as if tortured. It was slow, had a small head, and was a pale pink color. His body was covered with hundreds of furry looking appendages. Should I be concerned? Is it a threat to my other animals? I have no idea what it is or where he might have come from … I can not imagine that has been there all 5 years … I will not take place if it is harmless … He filled the glass, so maybe it was eating algae? But if he is a risk, particularly to my fish, I want to get rid of it ASAP. Anybody know what the hell is it?
It is a bristleworm, also known as Aquarium fire worms. You can get up 18 inches long, but usually are smaller than this. They live in crevices in the rocks and go out at night to delve into the darkness. You can eat in corals, but as I have no corals, then you should not have a problem with it. They've been in the tank, as he did, but have been too small for you see. If you look carefully after the lights go out I sure you will find some more. It can take if you do not want, but I can not see doing any damage, but do not touch the tip bristles are poison and can deliver a painful sting.
