aquarium gemstones
Besides the sand and gravel, which other aquarium substrates are good?

Something to 2 dojo loaches in a 30 gallon tank. Gravel which is small and not Acute is hard to find (to generic color gravel work?) I'm leaning towards precious stones – something like this is http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10469/product.web This is fine? Is there anything else that work? What about barebottom tank?

I hope you are aware that the "precious stones" are just pieces of glass … You could do that, but would deprive the dojos of their special skills: digging. For this reason, it is best to get sand. They are less likely to injure themselves in the sand, and can generally find very cheap sand (unlike gems where you would spend about $ 50 + to cover the bottom of a tank of 30 gallons). I use the pool filter sand (diatomaceous earth), and have no complaints. It is easy to clean, easy to maintain, and indeed is quite high in nutrients that help to grow aquatic plants (iron, calcium, phosphate, etc.). You can get a bag of 25 pounds (enough to give a 1 + layer an inch of sand in a tank of 30 gallons) for less than $ 10 in most pool supply stores. Email if you have any questions. Soop Nazi EDIT: colored gravel is inert and therefore has no effect on pH at all. Diatomaceous earth also has no effect on pH. Just be sure to wash before put it in your tank, and you'll have no problem with dust. To clean, siphon hose pass (with the attachment removed) on the sand, and rise all stern and food, leaving the arena (it will take some practice, but you get to the point where they suck any sand). EDIT 2: You could make a tank barebottom too, but would probably be quite stressful in Loaches (because not being able to dig) …
