Aquarium Hood hot with bulbs?
I have a new incandescent hood (10g size) and 2 games are rated to be capable of handling up to 25watt bulb. Well I put in some bulbs compact 20Watt fluoresente on and after 20 minutes was very, very hot to the touch and smelled vaguely of plastic (there was no smell before) was very prompty off and looked down. The reasoning of CFLs is that running a planted tank (an increase of 5 g) and bulbs I can choose any watt and obtain spectra that need besides that is available in my area rather than fluorescent tubes. I could have been more than react, but I would rather ask and be sure it's "ok". House fires are no fun.
Yikes. Have you considered nixing the hood and in Instead, use a glass cover and compact accessory power? I am very Leary about using the old incandescent full hoods I have seen more than a few become on a molten mess (no fire, thankfully) and not considered safe.
