filtration saltwater aquarium?
I had a saltwater tank 50 gallon for over a year. The bottom line is that I am unhappy with the leak. I currently have a wet / dry trickle filter with a pad phospure as filter media. Sometimes I put some carbon in a bag of the media in the sump well. I have huge algae, and my water is rarely clear. My live rock is starting to suffer from the fact that I have to cut so long as the light of the outbreaks algae. I am willing and very interested in hearing what you recommend for the aquarium intermediate / advanced filter set. I think a UV filter is necessary and also ar / or water system, but I have no idea how those works, which connect the filter system somehow or simply a source of water in the house? Again, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
The R / O system will do little to control Alge. The UV filter will not do much at all. The questions are: what kind algae, and which animals have? Also note that a common factor is overfeeding. Hair algae is a common focus, and drowned almost any surface. Astrea and turbo snails tend to be cheaper and easier to find, and will cut this down quickly … unless you have something to eat snails. Blennies spikes lawnmower and many species of Tang (yellow are popular and easy to find) also eat hair algae. Nimble Spray Crab (brown / yellow / Green crabs erroneously sold as "Sally lightfoots", the latter of which are actually red) also feed on algae, hair, pulling it even one hair at a time. If you have algae bubble Vermithrax go with some small crabs. If you have any mud from the best thing you can do is pull it up (with a vacuum or a turkey baster) and increase the flow in the tank. Some hermits are said to feed on algae, slime, but I personally have not seen that in fact stick with it. Another option is to establish a refugium connected to your filter. If you place a fast growing algae in the refugium (as a species of Caulerpa) and keep burning 24 hours a day, you can try to outcompete the algae in the reservoir by blocking nutrients from the algae in the refugium. Note that this not be the end of all algae problems: you still have to get rid of things in the main tank.
