pH levels in the aquarium?
So I'm nearing the end of my cycle for my 55 gallon aquarium. I have a new test kit and tested the levels pH and were 8.5! Then I tested my tap water and was 8. So everything in my tank I have some driftwood, rocks, sand, and fluorite. To help solve the problem, took me out of the rocks thinking they could go higher pH. I have also changed about 10 gallons of water with clean water and treated. I'm thinking of getting Live plants next week, so I did a DIY CO2 diffuser with bottles of soda and yeast. I had read that the CO2 can lower your pH, so I hooked up all last night and let it run. So today I tested my pH in my tank and was 8. Ideally I would like around 7 or 7.5, so what else can I do?
Try adding some peat moss to a mesh bag and put it in the filter. It is more acidic than floating, and more permanent that the use of chemicals, but tend to turn the water a light brown. You have to experiment to find out how much to use, because water must be very alkaline. And keep in mind that each time you make a cahnge water, is the removal of water which is 1 pH and the addition of new water with a higher pH, so smaller more frequent water changes are best for keeping pH fluctuations too. Another thing you can do is to add reverse osmosis or distilled water for tap water in some of rationing. Distilled water has eliminated all other minerals, and Romania has eliminated most, so this may help dilute the that is causing the pH is high. But once you start any method, you have to stick with it to keep the pH stable. The crowd can range from several changes of water, but you must monitor to know when to change pH of peat in the bag. Once you have established some proportion of tap water distilled or RO water, you can continue using the same proportion that unless something happens to your water supply.
