Wayanad, the exotic destination in Kerala, India

Wayanad literally means land of paddy fields. That is a virgin extension of virgin forests in the Western Ghats bordering the Nagarhole National Park, Bandipur National Park andMudumalai. The environs of Wayanad offer a wide fog range of hiking opportunities, visits to plantations and wildlife tours. It is clean, pristine, enchanting and mesmerizing that is steeped in history and culture. This paradise Green is located between the Western Ghat mountains and is at a distance of 76 kilometers off the coast of Kozhikode. It is a must for nature lovers destination and nature lovers. The wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad was established in 1973 with an area of 344 square kilometers. It is an immense mass of life wildlife to move in its most natural abode. Wayanad is a land of spices that produces crops such as coffee, black pepper, ginger, turmeric, cocoa, arecanut, tea, rubber, vanilla, etc. The black pepper its hill station is famous for its world-class quality and aroma. It is 15 kilometers northwest of Kalpetta in Wayanad Kerala. In the reservoir of the dam is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding flooded. These islands with hills Banasura in the background offer spectacular views. The dam has a large expanse of water, limited, except for one side, surrounded by magnificent hills and green landscape that has the charm of heaven. Banasura Sagar dam is an ideal starting point for excursions into the surrounding scenic mountains for trekking enthusiasts. Pookotte Lake: This lake is located 3 miles Vythiri south. It has an area of 8.5 hectares and a depth of 6.5 mtrs. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in Kerala, surrounded by evergreen forests and hills. An aquarium pools with a variety of fish is an added attraction. You may experience time salacious, scenic beauty along hypnotized and unspoiled nature. Chains Vythiri taluk of mountains, through which the road from Kozhikode ascends the Wayanad plateau the amazing curves and ridges. This place is an ideal picnic spot for locals and tourists. It has a quiet environment. Pookot lake resort in Vythiri is the most sought after tourist spot of Wayanad. You can visit the aquarium and green house and enjoy boating facilities. There are exotic spices and handicrafts for sale in Pookot.

Sultan Bathery: It is a small town in Wayanad which derives its name from the famous rule of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. He built a fortress in the 18th century here. He was also known as the Sultan of the battery, Tipu had used this as a place to store ammunition. Despite the strength and no more, but this place is worth visiting for the famous Jain temple. It was previously known as Ganapathivattom.

Begur Wildlife Sanctuary: Located 20 km from Wayanad in Western Ghats Mananthavady. The lush vegetation this park is very popular among tourists. The trees in this region have high medicinal value. There are many species of wild animals inhabit this region. You can see elephants, deer, wild boar and many species of smaller animals, reptiles and birds from December to May.

Chembra Peak: It is the highest peak in Wayanad is located at an altitude of about 2100 meters above sea level at a distance of 14 km from Kalpetta. This peak is the mountain chain Wayanad in Western Ghats, along with the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Vellarimala in the district of Kozhikode in Kerala. The elevation makes it an ideal place for trekking and mountaineering. You need permission from the forestry office in Meppady for hiking to the peak Chembra. You can also see a heart shaped lake en route to the top of the peak. It is believed that the lake has never dried, even in the hottest summer. This peak is one of the most favored destinations for trekking who met with many fans the trails all year round. You can enjoy breathtaking views from the top of the peak. It takes a day to reach the top of the hill, we recommend spending a day or two camps.

Sentinel Rock Waterfalls: This waterfall is near the village of Vellarimala Meppadi Chooralmala in panchayat. It's a picnic as well as a trekking center. The sentinel rock, a rock of more than 200 m in height, is ideal forrock climbing.

Kanthanpara Falls: It is relatively smaller than Sentinel Rock Waterfall and rather less frequented, Kanthanpara and its surroundings are very nice and no tourism. Located within walking distance the main road.

Soochippara Falls: This waterfall near Meppadi is a natural treasure that has yet to discover. The stretches of waterfalls ranging at places 100 to 300 feet high in the middle of green areas are the treatment of eyes. The pool below the waterfall with crystal clear fresh water rafting offers and swimming. The huts in Soochippara tops of trees located within the dense forest to give unique view of the valleys of the Western Ghats and the bright shallows the surrounding springs.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary: It is most famous for the site 'elephant project, where herds of elephants are roaming freely, frolicking in the mud and water near the wells. Trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of southern India rainforests sheet deciduous forests and the west coast semi-evergreen. The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-group (6,000 sq.km), including all of the sanctuary, is under consideration by the Committee World Heritage UNESCO for selection as a World Heritage Site. It is an ideal place for soft adventure and nature study. The best time to visit the shrine is from June to October.

Pazhassi Raja Tomb: This is a monumental tomb to carry the great history and legend. Pazhassi Raja powerful warrior king, considered the 'Lion of Kerala, was the first to turn the techniques of guerrilla warfare against the British. This magnificent tomb was built in memory of the brave leader who died in 1805.

Pakshipathalam: Located in the Brahmagiri hills in Thirunelli which is a challenging tourist spot for adventure tourists. It is necessary to cover 17 miles through wild forest to reach Pakshipathalam. These are the deep rock caves formed among the blocks thickness of rocks in the northern end of the top of Brahmagiri houses that variety of birds and wild beasts. You are required to obtain a special permit from the Department Forestry Pakshipathalam visit. District Tourism Promotion Council provides buses, guides and camping equipment etc.

Edakkal Cuevas: These are at a distance of 25 km and 3 km from Kalpetta Ambalavayal. These are famous for their exceptional rock art carvings depicting the human figure and animal Neolithic and later civilizations. These caves were created by a crack due to climate change. The fractured rock is about 22 feet wide and 90 feet long. The gap and the gap in the rocks extending over 30 feet and appears as a cave for the observer. The caves can be reached via hiking trails in the wooded area starting in Edakkal. It recommended to visit the caves in the morning.

Meenmutty Falls: Located 29 km from Kalpetta which is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 meters. There are three major falls named Meenmutty Falls, Niagara Falls and Soochipara Kanthampuram. The visit to these spectacular falls is highly recommended.

Lakkidi: Located about 58 miles northeast of Kozhikode and five miles south of Vythiri. Wayanad is the door that is on Thamarassery, at a height of 700 meters above sea level. It is one of the highest locations in Wayanad which commands a picturesque scenery. There are high mountain peaks, the current gurging, lush vegetation and bird's eye view of the deep valley in the south with winding roads. You can enjoy a fascinating experience of 12 km long journey from Adivaram Lakkidi through ghat road with nine hairpin bends amidst thick forests.

WORSHIP CENTERS

Ananthanatha Swamy Temple: It is 6 km from Kalpetta near Sultan Bathery. This temple is popularly known as the Jain Temple. It is dedicated to Jain holy Ananthanatha.

Valliyoorkavu Temple: This temple is located 24 km. away from Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery 31 km and 5 km from Mananthavady. It is dedicated to the Mother Goddess that manifested in three main forms of Vana Durga, Bhadrakali and Jala Durga. This is an important place of worship of the tribes of Wayanad. The 15-day annual festival is held in March / April.

Lava-Kusha Sita Temple: Located 50 km from Kalpetta, 25 km from Sulthan Bathery and 41 km from Mananthavady. This is the only temple dedicated the lava and Kusha, the sons of Lord Rama. There are local legends connect this region with many important episodes from the Ramayana. As the sanctuary for the Pazhassi Raja, this temple has traditionally allowed your devotees of all religions.

Thrissilery Shiva Temple: Located 50 km from Kalpetta, 25 km from Sulthan Bathery and 41 km from Mananthavady. This temple has impressive perfect architectural proportions that are closely linked to the temple to Vishnu Thirunelly. It is believed that the celebration ancestral rites Ramain Thirunelly unfinished unless followed by offerings at this temple. There is also a shrine devoted to Jala Durga inside the facility that is believed to have been installed by legendary Parasurama. There are myths about the temple tank which has never dried up to date.

Thirunelli Temple: Located 64 km from Kalpetta, 71 km from Sulthan Bathery and 29 km from Mananthavady which is surrounded by mountains and forests. This river is an ancient temple fine specimen of classical architecture Kerala Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma in the form of Chaturbhuja. Often referred to Dakshina Kasi (Kasi of South). This temple attracts pilgrims everywhere especially in the ancestral rites. A few steps from this temple is the place for mountain spring known as Papanasini. A ritual bath this spring, it is believed to wash away sins. There are two festivals that are celebrated in this temple in April and August / September.

Pallikkunnu Church: Established in 1905 by missionary Father aFrench initiative. Jeffrine dedicated to the Lourdes Mata. Is 19 km from Kalpetta, 38 km away from Sulthan Bathery and 23 km from Mananthavady. This church practices similar ritual Hindu temple is the most interesting aspect of this church. There are annual two-week "Perunnal" festival held in February that drew large number of devotees.

Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple: Located 24 km from kalpetta, 12 km from Sulthan Bathery and 41 km from Mananthavady. Was believed built in the 13th century, served as a Hindu shrine, an important commercial center and eventually as a battery (ammunition store) for hosts Tipu Sulthan's marching. This temple is one of the most important among a series of ruins spread across Kerala that testify to a period of a strong Jain presence in this region. There are other significant Jain temples in Wayanad in Punchavayal and Puthenangadi.

GETTING Wayanad?

For Air: Kozhikode is the nearest airport is at a distance of about 25 km from downtown. It is well connected by air to Mumbai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Goa, Madurai and Chennai.

By train: The Kozhikode railway station is located south of the Plaza Manachira. The city is well sent by rail to important places like Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Bombay.

By road: Kozhikode is well connected to various destinations in Kerala and other parts of the country. National Road No 17 Kozhikode links with other cities in Kerala and neighboring states.
