ammonia levels in the aquarium gravel?
Hi I am having trouble getting my ammonia levels below 1.0 mg / L in the tank of my 34L, the tank is 6 weeks old and has only a small number of tropical fish in it. No matter how many changes of water (dechlorinated water) level I Nevers ammonia seems to fall! My local fish store suggested the elimination of certain elements of the tank and put them in containers of clean water and after a few tests days in search of traces of ammonia. Well, yesterday I tested the sample bowl of gravel and has a reading of 0.50 mg / l of ammonia from him. Is it possible that these readings can be caused by a loosening of the gravel of the aquarium is ammonia or thourougly I do not clean the gravel in the water changes ar the cause?
any new deposit will have problems with ammonia until it is done by bicycle. It take 4 to 8 weeks for levels to drop. At 6 weeks of age and the fact that you has made changes of water means that the tank is still Cycling. Another thing that could give high levels of ammonia is that your tank is 34l water 9gal and if you have say 6 of their fish tank is in the boundaries of what we can handle. There will be a large amount of ammonia by gravel, as any extra fish food and collect the fish were there. So to me the tank is very normal for a new tank cycling.
