How to configure a Betta fish aquarium
Aquarium Size
Betta fish aquariums vary in size, ranging from small fish bowls to large, full-sized aquarium. To fully understand the requirements of a betta, we must look to the natural environment as a basis. Bettas come from slow moving streams, lagoons, and rice paddies of Asia. And those conditions should be repeated in order to effectively rear bettas. So, to mimic these conditions, the Betta fish tanks should range from 5 to 10 gallons.
You can get a larger aquarium, if you like. Your Betta will not complain. There really is no upper limit for the size aquarium if you provide enough hiding places, but very little room shorten the life of your Betta at best and at worst will create conditions in which simply do not survive.
A large, 5 to 10 gallon tank would benefit both you and your Betta, because the temperature in a larger body of water tends to be more stable and only changed a little when the ambient temperature changes. The larger tank will also benefit because it means that less frequent water changes. Contrary to popular belief, larger aquariums are easier to care for than smaller ones.
Aquarium Water
With the size of the tank to one side, we have to solve the other aspects of our Betta fish aquarium. The water is vital to the survival of a betta. The use of distilled water is best for bettas because of the filtering process that eliminates most minerals in the water. Tap water is usually enough for bettas, as long as they treat the water to remove chlorine and let it sit for more than 24 hours before adding it to your tank.
When I first bought the tank, let water sit for a few weeks to get the biological filtration cycle started.
Aquarium Filters
Filter the water could also be a problem. Bettas are very used to the quiet water or slow-moving in ponds and rice fields, which means that the use of a high flow filter on the inside of your Betta fish aquarium is not recommended. These types of filters will cause too much turbulence and it would be betta hard to reach the surface to take a break (Bettas have a specialized organ called a labyrinth that allows them to breathe air.)
Aquarium Heater
When you buy a heater for your aquarium, make sure you also get a thermometer. You need to check water temperature carefully, because fluctuations flash can be deadly for your Betta. Choosing the right heater depends on the size of the tank and the temperature of the room where you keep the aquarium. And even if you buy a high quality heater is likely to have to replace every year, so monitor and replace it right away if it stops working.
Aquarium gravel
You must also obtain a natural aspect of substrate or gravel to put in your Betta fish aquarium. Taking your backyard gravel, simply not going to be the best reproduction of their natural environment. You should also keep the tank temperature in imitation of their native climate of about 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Concluding remarks
Construction of appropriate aquarium betta fish is not as difficult a task. The first thing is to have a tank that is satisfactory size. Note however that the suggested size is a Betta fish. If you want to add a fish compatible, you may need to upgrade your tank size so they can be taken into account.
Apart from the size for a Betta fish aquarium, you must also learn to maintain the correct levels of ammonia, nitrites and pH. This is important so that water does not become lethal for your Betta.
Before actually bringing home Betta, give yourself enough time to test all equipment – Filter, heater, etc. Make sure the water and the whole set up is what has to be before introducing the fish to it. Error Number of new aquarium owners is trying to do too many things at once.
