Tap water use freshwater and saltwater aquarium, chlorine and chloramines to nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and
What should I know about tap water for my aquarium?
There U.S. standards for the quality of tap water (as I'm sure of other nations like the United Kingdom have their own regulations as well) but that does not mean that these allowed levels are safe for fish (or humans for that matter). This article will discuss the effects of substances in drinking water in fish.
Chlorine and chloramines:
To start with most city tap water has chlorine, which is an oxidizing agent (a chemical that gains electrons in a redox chemical reaction), but this can kill fish by burning their gills and blood poisoning. Some municipalities use chloramines because they are more stable than chlorine. Chloramines are a chemical compound of chlorine and ammonia and you can boil ours or allowed to sit for a few days to remove them before adding this water to an aquarium. You will need to remove chloramines before adding chemically tap water that contains this to your aquarium. Standard Chlorinators-like "Start Right Water Conditioner" will remove the chlorine, but leave the ammonia (NH4), either for bio filtration or Zeolite (freshwater only) for deletion. These chlorine-based products are simple-Reducers (sodium thiosulfate) and are quite safe, even against an overdose of some opinions floating around. Products such as "Amquel" or "Prime" (Removes ammonia, chlorine, chloramines, ammonia) "will remove chlorine and neutralize the ammonia (and more). First is made from hydrosulfite salts which are basically the reduction of toxic agents comprising no bisulfites and Hydrosulfite in aqueous solution, buffered at pH 8. As mentioned above, reducing agents are basically in reasonable doses nontoxic to fish and aquatic animals. Inorganic chemicals; nitrites, nitrates, copper, phosphates and fluoride:
Nitrites are allowed up to 1 ppm, but at this level there can be some damage in the gills of fish. Blue methylene can be used for the treatment of nitrite poisoning, but it is better to avoid this. A bio filter morality generally eliminate traces of it in tap water, as well as products like the first.
Nitrates are allowed up to 10 ppm, however, at this level in human studies of infants under Six months can become ill and suffer such symptoms as Blue Baby Syndrome. However, this level has shown no harmful effects in studies of fish I've seen, but levels above 20 ppm may harm some marine cephalopods. Ago in many marine aquariums also use reverse osmosis water to mix your mix salt or the top of evaporation, not to add hard to remove nitrates in your marine aquarium.
Other chemicals approved of the note are 1.3 ppm copper, phosphates (no standards) and 4.0 ppm of fluoride. Copper in these levels is not generally a problem with fish or aquatic invertebrates, but if you're treated with copper sulfate or if allowed to accumulate in a reef aquarium that is something that an amateur should be considered. Copper levels above 5 ppm can begin to be dangerous for some sensitive invertebrates such as corals and levels above 25 ppm can be dangerous to fish. It should also be considered for copper, which in hot water in particular, copper can also be added to tap water through copper pipes at home.
As for fluoride, I have not found conclusive studies fluoride on the damage to fish or other aquatic animals, in fact, trace amounts are necessary for the growth of corals in aquariums. So despite more stated concerns about fluoride in drinking water used in aquariums, this is where I would not consider.
As for phosphates, many municipalities use phosphates to reduce levels of lead found in drinking water. Phosphates create a protective film on the inside of the pipe, slowing the electrochemical processes leading to corrosion. Unfortunately for aquarists that this can lead to an extra algae growth, especially of Blue Green algae (cyanobacteria). This can be a real problem in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, with no easy solutions. I have used many phosphate sponges with mixed results, but I can say with certainty is that the carbon remove phosphate, in fact, some even add carbon to their level of phosphate. Protein skimmers in marine water may remove some phosphates, but I have not recorded that much difference.
The water changes with reverse osmosis water, and then the addition of trace elements and electrolytes back another solution. In freshwater aquariums, "Wonder deposits – calcium and electrolytes enhancer" can help with this, but the sea salt water mix all the elements you need.
